So, another day, another election. It’s fair to say that no-one was expecting this, but if 2016 taught us anything, it’s that there’s no point making political predictions anymore. This is certainly a monumental moment in UK politics, even compared to the events of the past couple of years. For the next few days the news will be filled with nothing else, whether we like it or not.
I’m not here to say if it was right or wrong to call a General Election. There’s only one message I want anyone reading this to take away from this blog: Our planet doesn’t care about politics.
The coming months are supposed to be an incredibly important time for environmental and climate action in the UK – a finalised Industrial Strategy, the new 25 Year Plan for Nature and a new Climate Change Bill in Scotland to name but a few things. Let’s not even get on to the issue of transferring environmental laws and regulations from European Union.
There is now however a serious risk that with the threat of an election looming, action on climate change is cast aside whilst all parties desperately campaign for every vote they can. This is something we simply cannot afford to let happen. Climate change doesn’t respect politics, party infighting, elections or referendums. Without urgent action, our climate will keep changing. Present and future generations depend on the UK taking a stand and committing to real action.
We need to make sure that this election doesn’t give the Government another excuse to forget about acting on climate change and meeting our international commitments on carbon reduction. Without exaggerating, our future really does depend on the UK taking a leading role on climate, regardless of national politics.
So, what can we do?
Tell your MP to stand up for climate action
Send a letter, email, tweet, messenger pigeon – let your MP know that you don’t want this election to be an excuse to put climate change on the back burner. Check how to get in touch with your MP here.
