The UKYCC Community Team aims to support the development of a strong, influential and diverse youth climate movement that, through action in communities across the UK, plays an important role in tackling climate change.

We coordinate a network of Local Catalysts, supporting individuals to take action on climate change in their community. The local catalysts network offers training, resources and ongoing support to young people as they participate in the youth climate movement at a local level, in whichever way is most appropriate for them and their community.

Catalysts come from a range of backgrounds: they may be students; in, or out, of work; seasoned climate change campaigners or those taking action for the first time. Due to the variety of backgrounds support for Local Catalysts is highly personalised, with one-to-one calls, regular group calls and training weekends.

We are also part of the wider UKYCC group and take part in campaigns and actions with members of the International and UK teams. We are currently recruiting for a number of positions in the Community team:

Local Catalyst Coordinator

There are several coordinators within the Community Team. Together they are responsible for coordinating the Local Catalyst Network – a national network of individuals taking action on climate change within their communities. Each local catalyst coordinator is responsible for maintaining communication with a small number of Catalysts and giving them support where necessary. The Local Catalyst Coordinators facilitate the programme, but we recognise that our Catalysts have as much to learn from one another as they do from us, which very much shapes how the programme operates.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Regular communications with the four or so Catalysts you are assigned
  • Attend regular Skype calls with local catalysts and the UKYCC community team, approximately every 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Help with the development of training and creation of resources
  • Help plan and run future training events
  • Respond promptly to requests for support from Catalysts
  • Help plan and deliver the expansion of the programme, including the recruitment of new Catalysts in the near future.

Person Specification

Essential

  • A keen desire to be part of the solution to climate change
  • Commitment to this role for a minimum of a year
  • Friendliness
  • Dependability – you will be supporting a team of people and so responsiveness to e-mails and requests for guidance is essential.

Non-essential but useful

  • Some experience of community action on climate change or other issues
  • Knowledge of running workshops
  • Experience of campaigning
  • Experience working in a voluntary role
  • An understanding and respect for consensus ways of working
  • Teamwork and/or leadership experience
