Politicians are in a pickle and ministers are in a muddle over on how to provide accessible jobs for young people as well as sorting out climate change. However last year, the green economy flourished and created 1/3 of the UK’s economic growth – which means jobs and a clean future.
In 2008, the UK government passed the Climate Act. This defining piece of legisation for our generation commits the UK to cut its carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. The first of its kind, other countries have followed this leadership creating their own Climate Acts and looking to the UK as an example.
However this is not the time to be backtracking on our committments and our green future. It’s exactly the right time to push for economic and environmental prosperity for young people now and future generations.
There are two key opportunities to deliver on the Climate Act this Autumn and UKYCC as part of the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition is telling David Cameron to make the right choices.
1. To include greenhouse gas emissions from international aviation and shipping in the UK’s carbon targets. The government must include these by the end of 2012.
2. Clean up the power sector by including a clear target in the Energy Bill going through Parliament this year, making sure electricity generation is zero carbon by 2030.
