Day of Action Officer –
The Day of Action (DoA) is the culmination of Powershift 09. This will be where participants put into practice the skills they have developed over the weekend. It needs to be big, fun, creative but most importantly something new – we don’t want just another protest march.
In this role you will be working as part of the logistics team (but working closely with the programme teams and with the current Day of Action officer) to make sure that our Day of Action is the best one yet (and other youth climate coalitions have really set the bar high http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9S2T5vPHjS8). As a member of the logistics team you will be helping to make the ideas and aspirations of the programme team and their DoA officer a reality. Ideally, therefore, you would have some experience in organising protests, photo stunts, rallies or have some idea of the process and restrictions for doing so. We are looking for someone who is happy to work on their own initiative but also happy to contribute to the team.
To apply, tell us about an event you organised; Was it a success? How did you know it was a success? How did you plan it? What were the challenges and how did you prevent or overcome them? Please email your answers to ellie@ukycc.org
Policy and Sustainability officer –
As a conference about climate change and sustainable futures, we want our event to be as sustainable as possible. We have to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. And this doesn’t just mean sustainability in the environmental sense (although obviously they will be key) either.
We are looking for someone to work as part of the logistics team (but in close consultation with all of the other teams working on Power Shift) to make sure that we have all the right policy in place, to make sure we put on a safe and responsible event, and to make sure Power Shift has the lowest possible carbon footprint. With the help of Ellie (the logistics manager) and Alex (the inclusivity and diversity officer) we want someone who can research and write different policies for the event, and who can advise on how to make us as environmentally and ethically friendly as possible.
As such we are preferably looking for someone with policy writing skills/experience (although this is not essential) and an understanding of the need for and methods of achieving carbon reductions. Previous event organising experience is a bonus! The successful applicant will be able to work on their own to research as well as part of the wider team, and will be confident to contribute advice and to ensure that the policies created are being adhered to.
To apply, please tell us about you and your background (in no more than 300 words) and tell us some of the policies and carbon reduction strategies you think we would need to have in place (the more the better but please limit it to 300 words, bullet point list if you like!). Please send your applications to ellie@ukycc.org
Registration officer –
All events need people to attend, and for Power Shift 09 we want 1000 young people. We already have a crack team working on recruiting these people but we need someone who will deal with the registration proccess, both before and during the event.
With all these people signing up and paying online, we need someone to work with the online team to make sure we are getting all the information we want and need. We also need someone who will make sure that the registration process on the day (i.e. the conversion from e-ticket to wristband) goes smoothly.
As such we need someone who is happy to work on their own and part of a team, is good at problem solving and ideally has experience with database syster, CiviCRM (although this is not essential). The successful applicant for this post will need to be confident working with computers and computer systems, but also happy to manage practical organisational tasks and problems, as well as lead the registration volunteers during the event.
To apply please tell us about a registration process that you have been through, why it worked well (or not!) and what you would suggest for our registration process. Please send your answers (to be no longer than 600 words) to ellie@ukycc.org
General Logistics Officers (x5) –
If you don’t feel like one of the above specific roles is right for you, never fear! We have openings for 5 general logistics officers who will work with Ellie, the logistics manager and the rest of the current logistics team to pull off this fantastic event.
These officers will work on a wide range of tasks, from organising crashpad accommodation to food discounts with local retailers, and from getting your hands on walkie talkies to working out where everyone can leave their luggage. These roles are not fixed, and as such each successful applicant will be working on tasks that fit as closely as possible with their specified skills and interests, and these tasks will be changing on a regular basis as we get closer and closer to the event.
As a logistics officer you will be happy to research and organise on your own, as well as work as part of the wider logistics and Power Shift 09 team. Previous experience in event management and organisation is prefereable (especially if that experience is in low carbon events) but is not essential. The logistics officers will be happy to take on a leadership role during the conference itself, should this be required, and will have an appreciation of the complexity of this event.
To apply, please tell in no more than 400 words about and event you have either organised or attended and what you think went particularly well or badly. Finally, please tell us what you would bring to the Power Shift 09 team in no more than 200 words. Please send your application to ellie@ukycc.org
